About Professor Tommy
Hello,
I’m Professor Tommy
I know firsthand what it’s like to live with ADHD.
I was diagnosed at 40 — after years of outward success, but constant feelings of overwhelm, burnout, and self-doubt. ADHD coaching changed everything. It helped me understand my brain, recognise my strengths, and finally build strategies that worked for me. It was so transformative that I trained as an ADHD coach myself, completing the UK’s first accredited ADHD coaching programme and becoming a Member of the Association for Coaching (AC) and the ADHD Coaches Organization (ACO).
In addition to coaching, I am formally trained and experienced in conducting ADHD diagnostic assessments for adults. I trained under leading consultant psychiatrists on Harley Street, London, and I adhere to NICE, Accreditation Quality Assurance Service (AQAS), and NHS standards. This means I can support you from the very first step of your ADHD journey — providing a clear, clinically informed assessment and diagnostic report, if you wish, and then work alongside you to build confidence, skills, and strategies to help you thrive through ADHD coaching.
My approach is grounded in compassion, professionalism, and collaboration. Whether you choose to work with me for coaching, assessment, or both, my aim is always to create a safe, non-judgmental space where you can better understand yourself and move forward in a way that feels right for you.
I am also a Registered Nurse with the UK’s Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), and I am bound by The Code: Professional Standards of Practice and Behaviour for Nurses, Midwives and Nursing Associates. These professional frameworks — along with the ethical standards of ACO and AC — guide my practice and underpin my commitment to confidentiality, safeguarding, integrity, and safe, responsible care.
My Professional Background
My career in mental health began in the mid-1990s as a mental health nursing student, and since then, I’ve gained clinical experience across the UK, USA, and Australia. I’ve supported people through a wide range of neurodevelopmental and mental health experiences — including ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, dementia, eating disorders/eating distress, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders, and significant life transitions that don’t always come with a label.
I am passionate about supporting adults with ADHD because I know it affects far more than attention — it can also influence self-esteem, emotions, relationships, and daily life in deeply personal and complex ways.
Alongside my coaching and assessment practice, I am proud to be a Professor of Mental Health Nursing Education at King’s College London, where I previously led the Department of Mental Health. I also hold honorary and visiting professorships at Queen’s University Belfast and the University of Virginia in the USA. I have published widely, including authoring the Mental Health Nursing Skills textbook used in nursing programmes worldwide.
I am also the author of the multi-award-winning book Curing Queers: Mental Nurses and their Patients, 1935–1974, which investigates the history of mental health treatment of LGBTQI+ individuals in the mid-20th century. This demonstrates my longstanding dedication to inclusive, compassionate care and to challenging the stigma still surrounding both mental health and queer identities today.
A Bit About Me
I grew up in Lancashire and now live in London with my two dachshunds. I bring to my work not just clinical and academic expertise, but also warmth, humour, and an understanding of what it’s like to walk this path myself.
Whether you’re seeking an assessment, coaching, or both, my aim is to provide a safe, non-judgmental space where you can gain clarity, feel understood, and take steps towards a life that feels more manageable and fulfilling.
